What “meat as the first ingredient” means

Advice · · Golosi

Golosi bags say “meat as the first ingredient”. You don’t have to take our word for it: you can check it yourself on the label. You just need to know how to read the composition.

How to read the composition

In the composition, ingredients are listed by weight: the first is the one the food contains most of. An EU regulation on feed labelling requires this, so it applies to every bag in the shop.

What coming first tells you and what it doesn’t

Coming first tells you that no other ingredient in the recipe is present in a larger amount. It doesn’t tell you what share of the whole food that ingredient makes up. You’ll only know that if there’s a percentage after the ingredient’s name, for example “Dehydrated chicken 36%”. Dehydrated means with the water removed.

How it looks in Golosi recipes

Recipe First ingredient in the composition
Dog Baby All Breeds dehydrated chicken meat 22%
Dog Small Croc dehydrated chicken meat 19%
Dog Big Croc dehydrated chicken meat 18%
Dog Complet dehydrated chicken meat 12%
Dog Country dehydrated chicken meat 12%
Dog Lamb dehydrated chicken meat
Dog Fish dehydrated pork and beef
Cat Kitten dehydrated chicken 36%
Cat Sterilised Pollo dehydrated chicken 34%
Cat Pollo & Tacchino dehydrated chicken and turkey meat 28%
Cat Tri Mix dehydrated chicken 22.5%
Cat Sterilised Low Fat dehydrated chicken 19%
Cat Sterilised Tonno & Salmone dehydrated chicken
Cat Manzo & Riso dehydrated pork protein

A recipe’s name doesn’t always give away its first ingredient. In Dog Lamb, chicken meat comes first and there’s 8% lamb. In Cat Sterilised Tonno & Salmone, chicken comes first, with 8% each of salmon and tuna. That’s why it pays to read the composition, not just the name.

A second number that comes in handy

For every Golosi recipe you’ll also find the share of protein that comes from animal ingredients. It ranges from 64% in Dog Big Croc to 83% in Cat Kitten.

Each recipe has its full composition on its own page: dry food for dogs and dry food for cats.
